Faculty Position Openings : University of California, Berkeley
High-Performance Structural Engineering
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of high-performance structural engineering. The appointment will be effective 1 July 2008, subject to final budgetary approval. The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in an appropriate field and must demonstrate potential for high-quality research and teaching.
The department is seeking an outstanding faculty member who conducts innovative research on systems, components, and/or devices to improve the performance of structures under extreme loadings such as earthquake, blast, and wind. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: development and experimental demonstration of high-performance structural systems; monitoring, control, and optimization of structural systems; system identification and damage assessment of structures; numerical simulation of high-performance structural components and systems; reliability- and performance-based design methodologies for structures under extreme loading conditions.
The faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the Civil & Environmental Engineering curricula, and will be expected to interact with faculty in the Department, the College of Engineering, research centers on campus, and relevant professional organizations.
UC Berkeley has excellent experimental and computational facilities for research in high-performance structural systems within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Earthquake Engineering Research Center (EERC). It is one of the nodes of the NSF Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). It also serves as the headquarters for the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER). CEE actively promotes interdisciplinary programs in information technology, sensing, control, embedded computing, and decision-making for complex systems within the College of Engineering and its Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS).
Applicants must submit by November 9, 2007, a detailed resume, a statement of teaching and research interests, copies of no more than two publications or manuscripts, and the names and contact information for five references.
Submission of electronic applications is preferred. Please go to our department website at www.ce.berkeley.edu. Alternately, hard copy applications can be sent to:
