Faculty Positions in Bridge Engineering
Fall 2014

The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York invites applications for multiple faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full) in the areas of (1) structural engineering, and (2) civil engineering materials. The two hires will support the growing Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE), which was formed in the Department in 2013 with a significant investment from the University. Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in one of the following domains:

Structural engineering: Areas of interest include bridge engineering, infrastructure engineering and renewal, earthquake and wind engineering, structural dynamics, and smart materials and/or adaptive systems to mitigate the effects of natural and man-made hazards. Expertise in multiple-hazard resilience is highly desirable. The successful candidate is expected to serve a leadership role in IBE.

Materials: Areas of interest include a) cementitious-type materials with considerations of fundamental behaviors and linkages between life-cycle performance and mechanical and material structure and properties, and b) polymers, composites, and functionally graded materials, high-performance metals and metal alloys, c) constitutive material modeling at all length scales in extreme environments. Expertise in condition assessment and/or bridge and highway infrastructure renewal is beneficial.

Applicants should demonstrate an original and creative vision for research. Successful candidate(s) will be expected to (1) develop an independent, externally funded and internationally recognized research program in his/her field of interest and supervise graduate students, (2) teach core undergraduate and graduate classes in CSEE, (3) develop and teach new graduate classes in CSEE, (4) work across disciplinary boundaries, and (5) serve the Department, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the University.

An earned doctorate in Civil Engineering is required prior to appointment in August 2014. Professional licensure, or the ability to obtain licensure within 3 years, is highly desirable.

Applications must be submitted online at www.ubjobs.buffalo.edu, reflecting posting number 1300720, and should include a cover letter, a statement of research and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, contact information for at least three references, and up to three relevant publications.

Questions may be directed to Professor Aref (aaref@buffalo.edu) or Professor Whittaker
(awhittak@buffalo.edu). Review of applications will commence on December 15, 2013 and
continue until the positions are filled. The University at Buffalo is an equal opportunity,
affirmative action employer that is committed to diversity in its faculty and staff. Women and
other traditionally underrepresented groups in civil engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.
