Multiple Tenure-Track Faculty Positions
The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo, in Buffalo, New York announces the opening of faculty positions in civil, structural and environmental engineering, starting in August 2016. The new hire(s) will grow existing departmental strengths in these core areas of its program.
Applicants must demonstrate a creative vision for independent, original research. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to (1) develop an externally funded and internationally recognized research program; (2) supervise graduate students; (3) teach undergraduate and graduate classes in the Department; (4) work across disciplinary boundaries; and (5) serve the Department, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the University. The successful candidate(s) will be expected to combine experimental work with modeling based on fundamental principles, to show potential for significant impact on the profession, and have the talent to educate future leaders of the profession in the mastery and application of the areas of their research. Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Materials: high-performance metals and metal alloys; fatigue and fracture of metals; innovative, adaptive or multifunctional materials across multiple scales; multi-scale and multi-phase simulations; heterogeneous polymers, composites and functionally graded materials; computational material science
Structural engineering and mechanics: shock and impact engineering; wind engineering; large-scale experimental testing; resilience and design in a multi-hazard environment
Water resources and environmental engineering: modeling and field-based research in surface and coastal water quality, air pollution, and stormwater.
The Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo has approximately 600 undergraduate students, 200 graduate students and 34 tenured and tenure-track faculty and lecturers. The Department has hired 13-ladder faculty in the past three years and is in the midst of a period of sustained growth.
An earned doctorate in civil engineering is required prior to appointment in August 2016. Professional licensure, or the ability to obtain licensure within 3 years, is highly desirable.
Successful candidates will be expected to develop experimental and/or computational research programs in collaboration with other units in the Department and across the University, including MCEER (www.mceer.buffalo.edu), the Institute for Bridge Engineering (IBE: www.buffalo.edu/ibe) the Institute for Research, Education in eNergy, Environment, and Water (RENEW; www.buffalo.edu/renew.html), and the newly formed Department of Materials Design and Innovation in the School. The Department is particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of students and faculty, and share our vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential.
